Case Study – A.S.
Age: 15.10 yrs

Andy* was a 15 year old boy who presented as physically awkward and inactive. His difficulties were described by his parents and teachers as follows:

  • unable to write quickly or legibly for any length of time
  • poor memory for specific subject related vocabulary
  • poor spelling and very disorganised
  • would forget to do important homework and to study for test
  • frequently misinterpreted questions and requests
  • was easily distracted from the task at hand
  • was very tense and anxious
  • was afraid that he would fail his exams at school.

Andy attended his Extra Lesson each week and participated well in the home exercise programme, performing his exercises daily.

After 22 Extra Lessons, just over halfway through his programme, his parents reported that the above behaviours have almost completely resolved. Andy passed all his end of year exams. He is relaxed, positive and smiles often, revealing a good sense of humour. He is also much fitter.

Andy reports that he can write for a greater length of time and his hand does not hurt anymore. He finds it easier to get his ideas organised and down on paper, and has recently received a Merit for his required Speech in English. Andy is intending to do an Electrical Engineering degree at university, after completing college.

Andy received his Extra Lesson programme at the Developmental Leaning Centre, Tauranga NZ.
