The first step in assisting your child is a developmental assessment
to
identify as clearly as possible the underlying causes of your child’s learning
difficulties.
An Extra Lesson assessment takes 2-3 hours and is focused on
the underlying
capacities needed to achieve full learning potential.
A comprehensive developmental
history will be taken prior to assessment of:
The assessment also includes:
Most of the assessment takes the form of games, drawing and movement activities. Some children, who may be concerned about tests quickly relax and enjoy the assessment.
We are looking for the underlying causes of your child’s learning difficulties. Educational research in recent years has discovered that missed developmental stages may result in immaturities or developmental delays that contribute to learning difficulties.
Additional testing for auditory/listening difficulties may be recommended if necessary. This may happen during the main assessment as many Extra Lesson practitioners have additional training in both auditory testing and therapy.
Depending on the practitioner, the results may be given to you at a parent feedback session and/or in a written report.
Parents may also be referred to a doctor, developmental optometrist, osteopath, nutritionist, naturopath or other professional with experience in the area of learning difficulties e.g. a behavioural optometrist for vision and eye movement problems.
